Police Department
Abandoned vehicles are an eyesore and a nuisance that detract from the overall appeal of our community. Our Patrol Offices regularly check their sectors for abandon vehicles. The sooner a vehicle is identified and posted as abandon, the sooner the process to remove the vehicle can begin.
According to the Pennsylvania’s Motor Vehicle Law, a vehicle is considered abandon under the following circumstances:
The vehicle is left on a highway or public property in an inoperable condition for 48 hours or longer.
The vehicle is left illegally on a highway.
The vehicle is left on a highway or public property for 48 hours or longer and does not have a valid inspection sticker, license plate, or VIN number.
If you have a complaint about an abandon vehicle, call Cheltenham Police at 215-885-1600.
A Police Officer will follow up on your complaint to determine if the vehicle meets the criteria to be considered an abandon auto. If the vehicle is local, Police will attempt to contact the owner and have the vehicle removed from the highway. If we are unable to contact the last listed owner of the vehicle, a Police report is made, and our Highway Safety Unit will post the vehicle with an orange abandon sticker.
If you have a question concerning an abandon vehicle, you can contact the Highway Safety Supervisor.
Specially trained members of the Cheltenham Township Police Auxiliary Unit are available to perform non-criminal related fingerprinting for anyone who works or resides in Cheltenham Township.

Public Works
Call 215-887-6200, ext. 330, to schedule a
Special Collection before placing any items at the curb. Special collections entail a fee, depending upon the material involved.
In the first two weeks of the loose-leaf collection in 2010, the Township vacuumed 1,680 cubic yards – or 84 truck loads – of leaves off the streets. Removing leaves quickly also prevents them from blocking storm drain inlets
After the scheduled collection is completed, Public Works officials evaluate neighborhoods to determine special third loose-leaves collections for the first few routes in the schedule. Notices are posted in the affected neighborhoods, as well as the Township website and cable access channel, to announce the third collections, which are weather dependent.
The Township rearranges the schedule every year so no routes are always first or last.

More InformationCollections begin in mid October to allow enough time for two loose-leaf collections before winter weather sets in. Leaf vacuums aren’t effective in ice or snow. The schedule is designed to complete the second loose-leaf collection before December 25.
