The main work on the current job (Church and New Second Street) was slowed down by some rock, but will be complete with the main installation on Monday. Following that, there will be prep work to get ready to gas up the new main. We hope to pull in the end date by accelerating the service work.

Route 73, Church Rd.
  • Ashbourne Rd.
  • Washington Lane
  • Willow Grove Ave.
Crews will restrict travel lanes on these state highways to patch areas of deteriorating pavement. Motorists are advised to be alert of this moving operation and to expect intermittent lane closures and possible slowdowns when driving near work crews. All activities are weather dependent.

PennDOT would also like to remind motorists that potholes and other roadway concerns on state roads can be reported by calling 1-800-FIX-ROAD or visiting and clicking on “Submit Roadway Feedback.”

Aqua will replace the existing water main on New Street between Glenside Avenue and a point 300 feet s/o Glenside Avenue.

The project is scheduled to begin the week of March 5, 2018 with completion expected in May. Construction will typically take place week days between 7AM and 3PM.

Following the installation of the new water main, there will be a period of time during which the main will be chlorinated and tested before being put into service. During this phase, activity on the job site will be limited. Once testing has been completed, Aqua will transfer each water service and any fire hydrants onto the new main. It is important to note that the trench will be covered with temporary black top at the end of each work day. Once all of the activity described has been completed, permanent restoration will follow in about 30 to 60 days.

Access will be provided for emergency, mail, school buses and trash services. Residents will have access to their properties but at times will need to enter from a different direction due to changing work zones.

Greenwood Avenue & Church Road Left-Turn Arrow

The Township installed a left-turn arrow for westbound Church Road drivers turning towards Route 309 on September 28, 2016. Although unlikely to completely eliminate traffic backups in the area, the left-turn arrow should provide some relief to traffic flow until PennDOT completes a more extensive signal and intersection upgrade that includes creating a dedicated left-turn lane. PennDOT’s project is scheduled to go out for bid in 2018.

Jan 14, 2016

As a result of PennDOT inspections, Cheltenham Township officials announce changes that will impact traffic on two local bridges, one on Easton Road and the other on Ashmeade Road.

First, the weight limit of the Montgomery County-owned Easton Road bridge located near the Toxany Avenue intersection has been lowered to 13 tons because the bridge is considered “structurally deficient and functionally obsolete.” Trucks over 13 tons should follow posted detours using West Glenside Avenue and Limekiln Pike. Later this month the Montgomery County Commissioners are expected to authorize the first steps in the bridge rehabilitation process, which could take approximately three years to complete.

Ashmeade Bridge Second, Cheltenham Township has eliminated one of two west-bound lanes on Ashmeade Road between the Philadelphia border and Tookany Creek Parkway. To help compensate for the lane loss, the left-turn arrow at the parkway intersection has been extended. In addition, the double yellow line has been shifted to the center of Ashmeade Road, and reflective delineator posts have been installed along the shoulders of the bridge.  The bridge weight limit of 5 tons has not changed. The new traffic pattern will remain in effect until the township replaces the bridge, expected to begin later this year.
